Happy 1st Anniversary, chelseaswag.com

Last year, I mustered up all the courage I could to take what was in my head and write it down for the world to see. Http://chelseaswag.wordpress.com became a personal project of mine that, at first, I was hesitant to publicize. Will people be critical of me writing style? I asked myself. What about my views? My personal style? My opinions and my jokes? I spent two weeks ruminating over these worries, and finally I said to myself, ‘FUCK IT’, I am me, and I’ve never cared what other people have to say about my opinions or my style, so why start now? So I came out with my “VICTOIRE” post about jewelry, and finally, my biggest debut was a post after a trip to Montreal, “Swag is wearing the right clothes and going out with the right people.”

It still took a lot of courage to face compliments and potential criticism. My blog received a lot of support, though. Surprisingly, a lot of male readers came up to me and guiltily (sometimes drunkenly) would say “I read your blog, keep going, it’s awesome” or “you should come out with a post about men’s fashion, I’d love to read it.” I also had a good guy friend tell me that I should edit my work and before I posted it and I’d get more readers. He told me that people who generally read blogs are very critical of one’s writing style, and that I needed to pay more attention to mine. Obviously I don’t like criticism, but that was the kick in the ass that I needed to want to do better. And I did.

A lot of my female friends have been super supportive of it too, and now come to me for fashion advice. I love that because it means that although people might not always think what I wear is for them, but appreciate my taste all the same. I’ve also become closer with girls who share the same ideas and tastes as myself. So being forthcoming with my opinions definitely does have its perks!

Finally, one of the most important things about being a blogger is that your blog reflects ‘you’.  Today, we instantly ‘friend’ the people we encounter daily on Facebook, BBM, exchange numbers, etc, but that doesn’t mean they know us. In fact, I’d venture to say that a vast proportion of my Facebook friends don’t know the real me at all, they just know what they see through pictures, comments, and interactions with others. And well, if you don’t treat Facebook like a diary, people don’t get a real sense of who you are. Blogging is an outlet for me, and by reading my blog, you’ll get to know more about my intelligence, style, sense of humour, and my personal life. It has also pushed me to turn my creativity into a hobby, hence, all the studded clothing and shoes that I post!

All this to say: on this 1st anniversary of mine, I’ve decided to buy a domain and turn my creative outlet into http://chelseaswag.com. After all, you are your best investment!

Thank you for reading and please continue, I appreciate it more than you’ll ever know!

About ChelseaSwag

I have recently completed my Criminology degree with a concentration in law and a minor in psychology at Carleton University in Ottawa. The past three years that I have spent away from my home in Montreal have only reconfirmed my ever-longing desire to become involved in the fashion industry in some way. Although there are a lot of fashion blogs out there, I have to first say that my own style will really resonate with the girls who are always looking to stand out- more so on a student budget. Different relatives and family members involved in the fashion industry have surrounded and shaped my love for fashion throughout my lifetime, however, none are quite so edgy as myself. I hope to enlighten the ladies that are looking to add a little extra oomph to their appearance, while also reflecting their own personal taste. But remember, swag is not only what you wear- it's a lifestyle. CP
